What is a boteco (or botequim)?
A boteco is the Brazilian version of a pub or boozer. Part of the Brazilian culture, it’s a casual bar where people gather to drink, eat and chat. Beer (orchope, which is draft beer) is probably the most popular type of drink in botecos, and football is a common conversation topic.
Botecos also serve snacks, small portions and sometimes full meals.
A typical boteco is not a sophisticated place, it has simple decoration, and for a Brazilian it’s usually a democratic and homely environment.
The best translation in my opinion would be BOOZER.
